Greencard Winners’ Congress 1999 The general managers Holger Zimmermann and Marcus Sieber lead through the agenda. They had invited such renowned speakers as Liam Schwartz, US immigration lawyer and author of the book United States Immigration and Work Permits. Mr. Schwartz talked about the general procedures until the winners actually receive their card. After the winners are notified, they have to go through a bureaucratic process. The last step is an interview at any US counselate, where the immigrant visa will be issued. Mr. Schwartz explained that this interview is quite easy but should be taken seriously. Our customers received a complete guideline on how to respond to possible questions at the time of the interview. A tax expert from Arthur Andersen Consulting explained the US tax system and actual tax rates in the United States. Althuogh the tax system as a whole is quite complicated it was apparent that for most people, the taxes they would have to pay in America are much lower than in any comparable European country. At last, Georg Mehnert, emigration counsellor at the German Caritas Association, talked about issues such as social security, moving costs, health insurance and finding a job in America. This is not as difficult as many people suspected, since the current unemployment rate in the US is below 4 % ! With a greencard, an immigrant has the same rights on the American job market as any American and can thus hope for many good job opportunities.
