THE AMERICAN DREAM GreenCard FAQ

Is there any other way to get a Greencard?

Is there any other way to obtain a greencard?
Usually not: Except you invest 1 million US$ in the USA or have close relatives or an employer advocating in your favor. But even if a US enterprise does credibly assure you that they are willing to employ you, it has to be proven that you are not taking this workplace away from an American citizen capable of the same job. The process of presenting such evidence at the US Department of Labor is costly and can often take years.

This means: For persons without anybody in the USA advocating for them, obtaining a greencard outside the DV-2010-program is close to impossible. However, if you consider yourself particularly qualified or able to invest in the USA, we recommend that you have a look at the category “USA Visa Services” on our homepage. It is our aim to assist you in any immigration matters as well as possible.

How are the winners selected?

How are the winners selected?

Each participant will be assigned an electronically generated random number. Then, the US State Department selects all winners via an computer-controlled random procedure. A total of 55,000 applicants will receive a greencard.

If you belong to the successful participants, the American authorities will notify you directly in spring 2003. The subsequent correspondence will then be handled by the responsible American consulate in your country.

A detailed overview of all Greencard winners does not exist. You can find an numerical overview of last year’s winners sorted by native country here.

What could possibly go wrong with my application?

What could possibly go wrong?

More than you would imagine: On June 18th, 2002 a spokesperson of the US State Department announced that almost 40 % of all of last year’s applications were rejected for non-compliance with either the very strict format requirements or the tight deadline.

The personal information requested on the first application seems to be minimal at first sight. Thus, many applicants assume that the entry is very easy and that winning is just a question of good fortune. However, it is precisely because of this apparent ease that a lot of  mistakes are made. Many people apply each year armed only with their confidence in Lady Luck; but faulty applications put them out of the running right away. In raw terms, over three (3) million applicants were disqualified last year alone!!

The application requirements are very strictly enforced. The most careless error automatically disqualifies you. Given the large number of applications that are received in the US, a first screening is done by a computer before any of the applications are  handled by any staff members. Equally important is the deadline which is generally specified in August of each year. The period of four (4) weeks, that is normally given, is adhered to strictly. Applications that arrive even a minute earlier or later will simply be rejected and will stand no chance at all. During the eight (8) years of its existence, the lottery has taken place four times in February or March, twice in November and twice in October.
